Altered Life-Style vs. Diet It does not matter what type of “Diet” an individual tries when losing weight the chances are they will not work over an extended period of time. To lose weight and maintain it takes a commitment to an “Altered Life-Style”. With this Life-Style a person needs to know the meaning and the difference from a “Diet,” what is needed to succeed in the Life-Style, and how some “Diets” may aid in an “Altered Life-Style” and why they do not work by themselves. A person that wants to lose weight and maintain it will need to commit to a total “Altered Life-Style”, a change in their eating habits, and increase their activity level for the rest of their life. With a “Diet” a person will lose weight, but when they get to an appropriate weight, then they stop dieting. This is the means of destruction, as time goes on the weight will return. The word “Diet” means temporary and losing weight and maintaining it is not temporary. To maintain weight loss a person has to continue to work at living their life as though they are still trying to lose weight. When making a life-style change, it has to be determined the best calorie intake for that individual. There are many factors used to make this decision, some of these are: age, activity level, gender, height, bone structure, medical issues, and medications. When planning a calorie count for an individual the advice from that person’s doctor, or a license nutritionist would be suggested. Getting to know what the proper food groups are, and the correct amount for each of them are essential in losing and maintaining weight loss. This is a guide line that can be used to help understand the percentage of calories that should be present in a healthy diet, 45 – 65 percent of calories should come from Carbohydrates, 20 – 35 percent of calories should come from Fats, and 10 – 35 percent of calories
