CHAPTER I. The Problem A. Background of the Study Nowadays, some people are using product to heal their wounds, but some found it ineffective and make their condition worse. Some people use the power of nature to heal the wounds. One of the herbal plants that can cure a wound is Aloe Vera. This plant has triangular, fleshy leaves with serrated edges, yellow tubular flowers and fruits that contain numerous seeds. Each leaf is composed of three layers: An inner clear gel that contains 99% water and rest is made of glucomannans, amino acids, lipids, sterols and vitamins. The middle layer was latex which is the bitter yellow sap and contains anthraquinones and glycosides. The outer thick layer of called as rind which has protective function and synthesizes carbohydrates and proteins. Inside the rind are vascular bundles responsible for transportation of substances such as water xylem and starch phloem. The name Aloe vera derives from the Arabic word “Alloeh” meaning “shining bitter substance,” while “vera” in Latin means “true.” Aloe vera forms arbuscular mycorrhiza, symbiosis that allows the plant better access to mineral nutrients in soil. The botanical name of Aloe vera is Aloe barbadensis miller. It belongs to Asphodelaceae family, and is a shrubby or arborescent, perennial, xerophytic, succulent, pea- green color plant. It grows mainly in the dry regions of Africa, Asia, Europe and America. In India, it is found in Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Aloe is a genus of plants with more than 150 species. Aloe Vera is a species of "Aloe", native to northern Africa. They usually have short stems, fleshy, lanceolate leaves crowded in rosettes at the end of the stem, and the red or yellow tubular flowers in dense clusters.
