Summary This extract “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland; Chapter IX – The Mock Turtle’s Story” contains a conversation between Alice, the Mock Turtle and The Gryphon. Mostly the Mock Turtle is talking to Alice. He tells about his education, which, as he thinks, is the finest available. He has studied a variety of unusual subjects, such as Derision, Distraction, Uglification and Ambition. He also explains to surprised Alice that they were called “lessons” because they lessen with each coming day. When Alice asks what happens when there is no more time for lessons, the Gryphon, who is not really taking part in the conversation, quickly changes the subject to games. 2. Narrative The text is 3rd person narrative. The narrator is a 3rd person omniscient that is shown by Alice’s thoughts in the last part of the text and the fact that there are only few pronouns used in this text. Only 3rd person narrator knows what characters think. The narrator is also heterodiagetic and overt which means that is a non-character narrator and it is hidden somewhere in the background of the text. 3. Vocabulary and Register Register The register of the text is informal. It is shown by informal conversation between the Mock Turtle, the Gryphon and Alice. The informal register is shown by the usage of the contractions in the text, such as: ‘’mayn’t’’, ‘’didn’t’’, ‘’wasn’t’’ etc. No Latin or French words are used in this text and there are some interruptions, such as: ‘’Hold your tongue!’’ added the Gryphon, before Alice could speak again.’’, or ‘’That’s enough about lessons,’ the Gryphon interrupted in a very decided tone:
