tInteractive Notes on The Veldt by Ray Bradbury First Reading of the Story: Students generally relish in the gruesome outcome of this utopian (and dystopian) story. The story was written in the 1950’s, but the setting of the story still remains futuristic when compared to this day. Because of its dark nature and ideas regarding family and technology, the story would be excellent to teach in a grade 8 or 9 class. Second Reading of the Story: Some questions came to mind during my second reading of the story: * How would I characterize Mr. and Mrs. Hadley? * How would I characterize Wendy and Peter?
There was very little to no conversations in this story, which definitely makes it a third person narrator. The ending was quite a surprise to me because I didn’t quite understand the story too much. It was one of those stories where you had to sit back and rethink about what you just read and piecing it all together in your head. Overall, I didn’t really like this short story too much, I guess I am more into stories with verbal communications rather than the descriptive story because it made it harder for me to see how the main character was
Jessel on the stairs, three is not there, but this is the only sighting of a ghost in-which their face is not visible and in-which the governess is not given any feelings or any truths. This may be a device, by the author, to show the importance of the number three or to show that Mrs. Jessel is not trying to posses the governess to the full extent that Quint is. Also, it should be noted that Quint, in his life, often used women to get what he wanted; he was described as a “Hound,” so it’s not too far of a connecter to assume that he does this in death as well. The only question here is why Quint would want the governess to kill Miles. It could be, detainee for Miles rejecting him, jealousy, or a repetition of the murder of his own child, or something completely
Kingsolver dives into the story in a very compact way; like some of the smallest details recur, like Taylor being completely afraid of putting air in tires since the accident with Newt Hardbine’s dad. This story works on two levels; the first foreshadows
1 Shared Talking Styles Herald New and Lasting Romance Comm 200: Interpersonal Communication (ABE 1148B) Instructor: Shane Engle Deborah Howell December 4, 2011 2 This assignment created a challenge for me as I do not communicate with instant messaging, text, email, or any of the other chat lines that are offered on the internet. I did choose one message that I did answer from one of my family members. After entering the information requested on the website “Language Style Matching” I received a LSM score of 0.93. According to this test the results were not trustworthy because one of the writing samples was less the 50 words. The score of 0.93 suggested that the samples were very compatible
She explains how her son’s English teacher with unusual way instead of moving him to front row made him to be more serious about learning and specific English .The result was unbelievable, he finished that class with A grade .First Sherry was shocked when the teacher said “I flunk them” then she realized that would be helpful for her son. There are many styles for teaching which looks not proper for first time then after a while when you understand how that help to improve majority of students grades, you will start to believe that style’s advantage. So now we can say F word which author is used in her essay’s title is “Flunk.” Author explains about students who sadly have no motivation to continue their education and are resentful for passing any test which in their mentality they are already
Besides his age, he is also immersed into a foreign land and language. The author has taken only a month of French in New York before enrolling in school in France. He is distressed about how fluent his new classmates, who are also foreigners, appear to speak French naturally while he is struggling. “Sounded to me like excellent French” the author describes his “young” and “well dressed” classmates’ speech. Making things worse David’s teacher is more like a drill sergeant as she “marched in” and starts to take command.
My third difficult was the first time when I saw a book in English here in this country. I remember I could not understand anything in the TV, magazines or newspapers. I think that my ages slow me down in the language process. Age is very important to learn because when you are young the brain is brand new and like a sponge that catches everything. Julia had this advantages and that’s why she learned faster and better than me.
This is taken at the beginning of her adventure symbolizing that Alice is still young and that she has a lot to learn before declaring herself an adult. Although before drinking the bottle she does make a convincing argument showing the beginning challenges of growing from a child into an adult. “‘No, I’ll look first,’ she said, ‘and see whether it’s marked ‘poison’ or not’; for she had read several nice little stories about children who had got burnt, and eaten up by wildbeasts, and other unpleasant things, all because they would not remember the simple rules their friends had taught them”(Carroll 15). Even though drinking an unknown substance can be very dangerous, and this is where Alice’s stupidity and childish characteristics come into play (Alice in Wonderland Themes 1). Carroll shows another characteristic of young Victorian girls that they always do what they are told to and were not allowed to challenge authority.
The conch was just a shell that Piggy found, but when,” Ralph pursed his lips and squirted air into the shell witch emitted a low, farting noise…” (17) It began to symbolize power because they could,”...use… {the conch}… to call others. Have a meeting.”(16). The conch also represents authority. Even though it is just a shell the conch is a powerful symbol. For example when everyone is being loud,” Ralph smiled and held up the conch for silence.”(23) Obviously when the conch is seen being held it is a sign to be quit or to calm down.
