Homeschooling Why parents choose homeschooling over sending their child to public school? Homeschooling is a growing method of education and does not seem to be ending anytime soon. According to the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (10), approximately 850,000 students were homeschooled in 1999 and in the 2007 National Household Education Survey, it estimates that there is approximately 1.5 million homeschooled student’s nationwide (National Center for Education Statistics1). These two studies prove that homeschooling is a fast growing population among the education world (Ray6). There are many reasons to homeschool a child, from religious purposes to providing a superior education that can be individualized for a child and is done in a positive learning environment. For many homeschoolers, religion is the main reason for teaching their children at home. Homeschooling provides parents the opportunity to have more time to teach their children the family’s morals and values. When a child attend public school there is little time to focus on religious teaching. Parents feel "that their children do not obtain moral and ethical training much less religious values in America's public schools" (Pearson2). Homeschooling offers parent the time to include teachings of their family’s religious beliefs within their education curriculum, which leads to successful individuals with a moral compass. According to Dr. Ray, “homeschooling produces successful adults who are actively involved within their communities and continue to value education for themselves and their children” (6). Homeschooling give parents the control of their child’s education, so whether the child has special needs or is gifted, the material can be tailored to provide a superior education for the individual child.
