The speech communities are characterised by people who share the same norms with the regard to their language, this also means they have the same set of social attitudes towards language. By the speech behaviour of communities you are able to recognise the role-relationship between people of different racial groups or between family members, married couples and between friends. “Language has the power to affect interpersonal relationships positively or negatively. Interpersonal relationships involve relations between persons. Attitudes can be reflected through different forms of language usage, for example, address, greetings and gestures; proverbial expressions and religion. In this unit the reflection of attitudes will be focused on forms of address, greeting and gesture; language and religion; and oral tradition. These are the basic elements of communication a person must know if he or she intends to interact with persons of a different cultural background in a multilingual society.” Ubuntu is a way of caring, trusting and respect. It is important to me to apply ubuntu in our modern lives today. We all can benefit from this, it gives us courage to be who we are and who we want to be, it gives us opportunity to show our roots, to live out our different cultures.
