The act of pleading for, supporting, or recommending; active espousal is the definition of advocacy according to dictionary.com.   Advocacy is a concept that has been around for years and many people advocate for causes on a daily basis.   Many people speak up for their children and family members or maybe a stranger whom may have been treated unjustly, this is considered advocating.  
The role I want to assume as an advocator is to give a voice to those individuals who suffer with mental disorders.   We have all heard people who suffer from disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder being called names such as “nuts”, “crazy”, “disturbed” and the list could go on and on relentlessly.   Webmd.com, defines mental disorders as a psychological syndrome or behavioral pattern that is associated with subjective distress and/or objective impairment. As an advocator for individuals with mental disorders, I want to raise community awareness of the negative stigmas that these individuals unjustly face. A stigma is a social injustice that discredits many people with mental illness, terribly harming them in the process (Corrigan, Roe, & Tsang, 2011). These stigmas diminish a person’s quality of life in the areas of employment, housing, in their relationships.   As a mental healthcare advocate I am going to help my clients overcome these stumbling blocks.   My primary goal in assisting my clients will be to ensure that they are medically receiving proper treatment.   I will accompany them to medical appointments to ensure that they are being treated fairly and not simply being giving medication as an ends to a means.   I feel that addressing a person’s medical needs is key in assisting my clients because if a person is not medically sound it can be difficult to assist them in other areas.   Next, I will link my clients to other support systems in their community to help them become productive citizens, such as finding employment, daytime...
