Advertising a necessary evil? We live in the Era of chaotic information. There is no doubt that advertisement has spread anywhere, which influences our life directly and in directly. Advertising is generally defined as any paid form of non-personal presentation and promotion of ideas, goods, or services by an identified sponsor. Its role is to implement product flow through the channels of distribution; to act as a catalyst in acquainting the consumer and to induce him to buy the product. Through the awareness or knowledge thus acquired, the buyer shows interest or liking for the product and finally makes purchases atleast on trail basis. Without advertising, the media, including newspapers, television and radio would never be much strong. Advertising provides revenue for commercial mediums which would otherwise need to be funded by the actual consumer of these mediums. So, we can see a major economic infrastructure based around advertising, in which the big companies fund and subsidize the commercial media by the way of advertisements. The major economic negative aspect of advertising is that it boosts the price of goods and services. The source of this contention is that, when organizations subsidize the mass media with advertising, we, the purchaser, subsidize advertising by compensating a grossly increased price for heavily advertised goods and services. An easy example of this is that a box of Surf washing powder generally costs around two to three dollars while the market price of the product would be seven to eight dollars. The fact behind this is that the remaining proportion goes in heavy advertising in television and print media. Our society and the marketing of products depend very badly upon advertising. The companies have become much dependent of advertising that even its negative impacts can never outweigh the many positive social and economic effects. OTHERS INCLUDE: • It increases the sales of the company. • It makes the customers aware about the image of the company. • It attracts new customers and creates brand loyalty in the previous customers. • If a company introduces a new product in the market then the company can use advertising strategy to inform the customers. DEMERITS: In contrast, there are several arguments against the merits of advertisement. To begin with, it disguises as if goods cheap and necessary. Moreover, some advertisements targeting children can mislead children to pester their parents to purchase. As a result, consumers commit over-consumption, which waste a large amount of money. What is more, this causes not only materialism but also mammonism.
