Carol Sharrock Third Essay Oct. 22, 2009 Family dinner time varies from family to family. It can be a quick trip through a drive-thru, eating at a restaurant, or a quick bite on the go. For some, it is a tradition to eat their meal at the dinner table as a family. Family dinner time is an effective way to communicate with, and learn about your family, and a way to build and carry on a family tradition. As a child, I remember coming home from school and doing homework while my mother was preparing dinner. Being the youngest of eight children, I remember our dining table as place to spend time with my siblings. This is where I learned the most about my brothers and sisters. I learned: Joe made captain of the football team, Mary wanted to become a Girl Scout, Tommy joined the Navy, Patty was in trouble at school because she had not finished her homework from the night before, Paula was getting married, and Michelle was moving to Dayton with her boyfriend. It was a way for us to connect. For my mother, it was a way to keep tabs on us. She knew if we were dealing with relationship problems, getting good or bad grades, or hanging with the wrong crowd. It was my mothers belief that having her children around the dinner table every night prevented us from being involved with drugs, developing healthy eating habits, staying connected, and instilling in us the importance of family. My mother was right. Many life lessons were learned at the dinner table. My friend Tracey grew up very similar the way I did. She was raised by a single parent, lived in a nice family neighborhood, and attended a good school. However, when Tracey came home from school, she was usually alone. A note with daily chores was left on the table along with five dollars. She was to walk to one of the nearby fast food restaurants to buy her dinner. She had no one to prepare
