Advantages and Disadvantages of Having Solar Electricity Advantages: • By harnessing solar energy, there is no production of air and water pollution which is great for a neighbourhood of people. • They can operate with or without a power grid which means it can be open to independent use. • They are maintenance-free once they are properly installed so people would not have to keep paying to keep using the generator. • They can last more than 40 years which is great for a family looking for a permanent residence. • By having a big solar farm with many solar panels can produce enough electricity for an entire neighbourhood which is great for people who do not want huge bills. • By installing solar panels on the roof, you have your own source of electricity and can save on money from losing electricity due to long-distance wiring. • Since there is sunlight everyday, it is a renewable resource therefore solar electricity will also be renewable. Disadvantages: • Some pollution is produced when manufacturing solar panels but still produces less pollution than other means of electricity in the long run. • Solar panels are only about 30% capable at changing sunlight to electricity so only 30% of the sunlight it receives actually is used as electricity. • Solar panels do not power large amounts of electricity from the get-go, instead, the panels has to absorb several hours worth of sunlight to produce a good amount. Solar or Nuclear? Personally, I, as a concerned citizen of my neighbourhood feel that with a solar farm, we can accomplish any electrical demands asked by our fellow neighbours.
