Professor Roger Ames began his lecture by speaking of the misconceptions that Americans have about the Chinese. Usually the Chinese culture is either romanticized or demonized. China and America are both are powerful countries and Ames spoke of the fact that if they do not join peacefully they are stunting the possibilities they have to change the course of the world. Ames spoke a lot about the focus on competition, a winner, loser, and every situation. Whereas Confucius would focus more on flourishing relationships and being respectful and loving all.
Google in China: philosophical principle; self-censorship; decline to invest in China 1. What philosophical principle did Google's managers adopt when deciding that the benefits of operating in China outweighed the costs? 2. Do you think that Google should have entered China and engaged in self-censorship, given the company's long-standing mantra "Don't be evil"? Is it better to engage in self-censorship than have the government censor for you?
On the other side Ethical Relativism is an approach to social responsibility in which a country adopts the moral code of its host country (Deresky, p. 51). With this approach companies sometimes run into value conflicts, as the host country, for example China, violates the human right laws. Considering those three approaches one can say that McDonald applied the ethnocentric approach. The company obviously tried to manage the case in an American way taking the Beijing City Government to court although this was strongly against Chinese values. They did not consider that China is a communist country, where the state is superior to every kind of criticism.
Next, how positive and normative economics reflect in the case study, and how market efficiency, economizing and the market system effect the ethical values of the United States, China, and Jamaica will be discussed. Role of ethics in decision-making for financial, environmental, and cultural issues Because the United States, China, and Jamaica all have different economic and cultural backgrounds from each other their business decisions are influenced by different moral standards. For example because China is converting to a capitalist economy from a social or command economy there will be conflicts between individualism and collectivism mentality. In the first vignette of the case study, the managers of the United States, China and Jamaica were asked about their views on bribery of foreign businessmen to gain access to his country’s market. In Rational C (bribery, unethical), E (is an acceptable practice in other countries), and F (is not unethical, just the price paid to do business) a large discrepancy is
Additionally, there are con’s when being confronted with issues and opportunities when alternatives are the only means to resolve the issue. Sometimes, the alternatives may jeopardize the company’s moral or ethics or even run contrary to their corporate motto, such as in the case of Google’s corporate model of “Don’t be Evil”. Unfortunately, their corporate motto, and their culture is in direct opposition to that of the China’s government when it pertains to internet usage, search results and disclosure of personally identifiable information. As a result, Google in China has had to define what it means to not be evil, while still attempting to remain relevant to their Chinese market. Let me ask you to be a bit more specific, but briefly answer.

Should they reinforce in China, attack other emerging countries, developed countries with their own brand or take the OEM route further? In our opinion Li wanted three things the most: TTE’s access to brands, intellectual property as well as access to Thomson’s sales network. TTE had to negotiate specific contracts for access to intellectual property owned by Thomson. We believe that a better option should have been to form an alliance, instead of a joint venture. This suggestion takes base in the lack of knowledge as well as in the big cultural difference that existed between among them.
There are also many issues involved in resolving legal disputes in international transactions. Some of these issues can be, but are not limited to enforcing binding agreements and applying which country’s law to resolve the dispute. When there is an international legal dispute and the dispute goes into arbitration there is no guarantee that the losing country will comply with the binding outcome of the arbitration. It will be up to that government to enforce the company to abide by the agreement. There are various ways to get the governments to abide by the
No, only customizing innovation is not enough to be acceptable, because the needs and challenges are different in developed and developing worlds. A company who want to meet customer needs in developing country has to make radical changes from below and above to integrate customer needs. The local company may able to have freedom to make decisions with all capacity. Being autonomous about location, staff, incentives reporting structures, targets, and process are the requirements for local company. When the traditional logic, dominant thinking reach on impasse and conflict appears a clean-slate
Western negotiation style tend to be very contract based, focused on many contracted paper works and signing procedures. Contract based negotiation may not fit in some of the Eastern countries like China. Chinese negotiators tend to have minimum paper works and more like to have mouth based contracts. In the Eastern countries, Western contract based negotiation can be viewed as a trust issue, or it may annoy the Eastern counterpart. But Western negotiators/companies sees contracted paperwork as an official way of doing business/negotiation, this way business can be seen as trustworthy.
