ACHIEVING NATIONALISM IN KENYA The definition of terms Nation: Is a large grouping of people brought and bound together by a common historical origin, same ancestors, common experiences, language and cultural practice. In international law, a nation has no legal status, sometimes a nation cuts across the borders of different states. State: An institution formed by people occupying a particular geographical territory or area for a common goal and under one government. Nation State: A term loosely applied to all modern states (countries) although strictly speaking it refers to those states where the population is made up of one nation under one government. Most of the African states consist of groupings of several nations. Nation hood: A process where people develop a sense of belonging and attachment to that state. There is also a sense of pride in this attachment .Nation hood occurs when people have achieved a high level of social political unity. Nationalism: Nationalism is a people’s sense of belonging together as a nation; their pride, culture and history and in many cases the desire for a national independence. Nationalism may also refer to Patriotism that is love of country and willingness to sacrifice for it or the doctrine that your national culture and interests are superior to any other. It can also mean the aspiration for national independence felt by people under foreign domination. What is nationalism? Although nationalism is wide spread today, it once did not exist .People have not always had a sense of nationhood. Early people felt they belong to the Cities or tribes .However since 1700’s; nationalism has an important force for international relations.
