Academic Referencing Assignment Student: Pedro Iriondo Date: 10.02.2014 Cheating and Academic Dishonesty in Business Schools The spread of internet access worldwide facilitates cut-and-paste cheating for college students (Etter et al., 2006). Dishonesty is specially observed between students of business schools (Levy and Rakovski, 2006), where cheating has turned into a common and socially accepted practice (Vojak, 2006). According to Salbu (2002) business schools students generally acquire the required analytical but not the expected moral principles. Whether their peers cheat or not strongly influence the students’ decision to do the same (Broeckelman-Post, 2008). Caldwell and Jean (2007) explain that business schools should concentrate efforts on fighting the current dishonesty with successful methods from other programs. Based on previous literature, Caldwell (2010) provides the business schools with guidelines to help them establish their own practical model. The faculties should define a clear objective and obtain the support of their administrators to ‘‘create a culture that discourages academic dishonesty’’ (Caldwell, 2010: 5) based on the five key values defined by the Centre for Academic Integrity (2007): honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility. Academic dishonesty cases should be understandable for the students (Caldwell, 2010). Bell (2005) and Morrow (2008) explain that the schools should put the emphasis on the ethics and not the punishment. However I believe that reviewing recent famous cases of academic dishonesty could help the students to better understand the consequences of their acts. The general opinion between the universities with honor codes is that ‘‘students should be involved in handling cheating incidents’’ (McCabe et al., 2003:369).
