Candice Jackson Honors 100 Academic Convocation September 19, 2011 Passion is defined as any powerful or compelling emotion; a word typically used in association with feelings of love or great desire. And what is life without passion? It becomes an emotionless, stagnate existence. At least that was my experience when I allowed myself to fall into a passionless rut. Now, being someone who has allowed them self to experience such a frigid reality, I am endeared to anyone who speaks with such passion as did Mr. Stephen Ralbovsky. As I sat and listened to Mr. Ralbovsky speak, I was able to empathize with him on many occasions. I too came from a family that did not have a great financial standing and college was not a regular topic. I had the academic standing to go off to college, but it wasn’t a common, or a necessarily important subject. Short of a community college, I had not given much thought to any school after high school either. When I learned that SUNY schools were also an option, Buffalo State seemed to be an optimal choice because of their broad range of courses; I still had not decided what I would do with my life. Hearing Mr. Ralbovsky talk about his experiences here at Buffalo State has encouraged me even more than the school itself already has. Knowing that someone else came into this school with a similar background and accomplished so much reassures me of what I can do with my own experience. Although I have been encouraged, since the very day that I was accepted by Buffalo State, to involve myself in its community, I have been slightly hesitant. Being a first year college student and not really knowing what to expect, I have not wanted to get in over my head with too much involvement. However, hearing Mr. Ralbovsky talk about all the things he did with his time here, all the shows he wholly scheduled, as well as the job he held, makes me more
