When it comes to the law there is always an opinion, some are for it and some are against it, currently the legal drinking age is 21. Approximately 5,000 people each year under the age of 21 die as a result to underage drinking. 1,900 of these deaths occur from motor vehicle accidents. 1,600 occur as a result of a homicide. 300 deaths occur from suicide.
This book covers a lot of issues: poverty, social justice, racism, cultural shock, self-awareness, hope, isolation, friendship etc. There are couple of things that stuck out to me , one is hope. Junior was born with many problems, living on an Indian reservation where he is bullied by local people, his father is a drunk, his mother is an ex-drunk, his sister is a recluse, his best friend Rowdy is abused by his father. It seems Junior should give up and accept the situation in such a bad growth environment. No.
This is a battle that I do not want to be better at, nor do I want to win. It makes me sick to my stomach knowing I live in a state where we are the national leader of killing people by making ignorant choices. Truly chilling facts to read. The only thing worse than living in the state with the highest drinking problem, is living in the city with one. Houston is ranked the 6th highest city in the state of Texas for drunk driving deaths, and also ranked 47th in the whole United States of America.
The United States of America is well known of their firearms law; thousands of guns are in the hands of civilians, causing an average of 30,000 deaths each year, downscale to an average of 85 deaths a day. With the astronomical amount of death only in the states, are the ones who created those firearms to be blamed on or is it the one taking control of the guns? Instead of blaming on the ones who created things that will cause harm to others, the ultimate ones to be blamed on should be the government, the education faculty, due to two main reasons, one, the government shouldn’t be allowing civilians to have firearms at all, it should be the governments responsibility to protect people, not the civilians themselves, if the government made an assumption that civilians are capable to protect themselves from different situation with firearms, what’s the point of hiring policemen? Secondly, if the government thinks that it’s necessary for people to have firearms for whatever reasons, the government should be responsible for ensuring everyone’s using them in the right way to use them and set up regulations, meanwhile, education faculties should be bringing out the correct concept of firearms, the right way and under what situation they are allowed to use the. Summing up the two reasons above, the blame of consequences should be on the government
By describing the depressing life of Jurgis, the protagonist of this novel, and his family, Sinclair reveals the ugly side of capitalism. According to Darwin's theory, "survival of the fittest" is the principle of animal evolution. In The Jungle, these working-class people associate with animals for they endlessly compete and fight for living. Their living and working conditions, in the readers' eyes, are considered awful; they work slavishly like animals, yet are even unable to achieve what they dream of. Living appears to be a luxury for these poor workers; their American dream is deformed.
Edward Valiente English 120 Professor Taylor 11/20/11 Gun Control The United States is the leader among nations in deaths caused by firearms. According to the Legal Community Against Violence (LCAV), the “gun epidemic” kills more than 30,000 and causes almost 70,000 injuries each year (para 7). Eventually, this leads to an uprising of gun control advocates, who seek to reduce crime and death rates by setting a variety of gun control legislation among the state and federal levels. Although, anti-gun control advocates believe that heavy restrictions on the access of firearms is unfair to American citizens, and a violation of the 2nd amendment in the U.S. constitution. However, evidence shows that a lower restriction on gun control ensures
Compared to the rest of Britain, it is shocking. Around 350 intravenous drug addict take fatal overdoses in the whole of England and wales each year. If London’s death rate was the same as Glasgow’s, more than 1,000 youngsters would die each year – three every day. [1] Also, the weather has an
A constant message throughout this documentary is that because some mentally challenged teens shot up a school and killed 15 students the 80 million responsible gun owners who handle over 300 million firearms in the US are somehow responsible (2011 Gallup Firearms Survey). Give credit where credit is due Moore did an outstanding job in selecting the most stereotypical, moronic and entertaining “pro-gunners”. Frederick smith of the Fox daily bulletin criticized Moore’s choice of psychopathic Nichol brother who was acquitted of charges in relation to the Oklahoma City Bombing. He stated “Moore’s choice of interviewee in regards to gun violence is absurd, and totally politically motivated, by choosing this one un-stable man he is generalizing and that is dangerous”. There is doubt that
For most of the people and organizations that support lowering the drinking age, their case is a person can fight and die for their country, serve jury duty , vote for President, but cannot have a beer or two while doing so. There are a smorgasbord of pros and cons to each side of the story. Cons “Alcohol consumption is the third leading actual cause of death in the United States, a major contributing factor to unintentional injuries, the leading cause of death for youths and young adults, and accounts for an estimated 75,000 or more total deaths in the United States annually.” (Wechsler & Nelson, 2010). Alcohol abuse is everywhere; mostly so in young adult’s
These numbers can only show the significance of violence on Indian reservations. There are many reasons for such a high crime rate on Indian reservations. One of the main reasons is for the high rate of alcoholism and abuse. With 12 percent of the deaths among American Indians and Alaska Natives being alcohol related. Native American youth are far more likely to experiment with alcohol.
