Abortion- America at a Crossroads Americans are proud of their life of liberty, freedom and the pursuit of happiness. But for thousands each year, that happiness comes at a deadly price. Each year about twenty- thousand unborn citizens are murdered. Unsafe abortions are a major cause of injury and death among women worldwide. Abortions result in approximately 70 thousand maternal deaths and 5 million disabilities per year globally. An estimated 44 million abortions are performed globally each year. Abortion is a danger to the mother, child and society. It should be banned. The reasons why women have abortions are diverse and vary dramatically across the world. Some of the most common reasons are being unable to afford a child either in terms of the direct costs of raising a child or the loss of income while she is caring for the child, support from the father, inability to afford additional children, desire to provide schooling for existing children, relationship problems with their partner, being too young to have a child and unemployment. I believe that any action which destroys a ‘fetus’ kills a person. Pro-life individuals generally believe that human life should be valued either from fertilization or implantation until natural death. The contemporary pro-life movement is typically, but not exclusively, influenced by Conservative Christian beliefs, especially in the United States. I also believe that respect for life should come first and abortion made illegal. Being a woman myself, I am obviously against people trying to control women or their bodies. But the fetus is a completely separate life from the woman. What some people don’t seem to understand is that a baby is not just a part of the mother’s body; it has its own body.
