Historical context of the abolition of slavery At the beginning of the colonization of Brazil ( XVI century) , there was in Brazil for workers performing heavy manual work . The Portuguese colonists tried to use Indian labor in the fields. The Indian slavery could not be carried forward , as Catholic religious positioned themselves in defense of the Indians condemning their slavery . Soon , the colonists sought another alternative . They sought blacks in Africa to submit them to the slave labor force in their colony . It was in this context that started the entry of African slaves in Brazil . Due to the poor condition of this inhuman means of transportation, many died during the trip .
