Abilities and Individual Differences in Athletics Jasmine McCauley North Carolina Central University Motor Learning PEDU 3000 Dr. Politano 10/16/2013 Having a set of skills for performing actives varies for different individuals. There are many factors that can contribute the difference in people’s motor performances. A phrase for that would be individual differences, which is enduring differences among individual’s performances, often attributable to differences in their abilities. In athletics, the athletes abilities, which is enduring traits that are genetically determined and that underlie a person’s skill in a variety of tasks, is what makes them different in their level of skill. Factors such as abilities, attitude, fitness level, learning style, experiences, etc. are all taken in consideration. Experiments to prove these concepts were conducted by Raut, Tanuja (2012), & Erculj, Frane and Blas, Mateja (2009). In Raut, Tanuja’s article it explains the relationship between skill performance and selected motor fitness variables of tribal women handball players. The skill performances such as the passing ability, defensive ability and dibbling were used as the independent variable. Speed, power, agility, cardio-respiratory endurance flexibility was used as the motor fitness variable. Both independent and motor fitness variable were tested by a series of different test. The result shown that defensive ability had positive correlation with speed and agility whereas explosive power, cardio-respiratory endurance, and flexibility had a negative correlation. The passing ability had a negative correlation with speed & agility and a positive correlation with explosive power, cardio respiratory endurance, and flexibility.
