He believed that all students should have the opportunity to take part in their own learning. Education was not only a place to gain content knowledge, but was a place to learn how to live. Schools shouldn’t just be a place to learn a pre-determined set of skills but rather to realize one’s full potential and their ability to use these skills. He said, “An ounce of experience is better than a ton of theory, simply because it is only in the experience that any theory has vital and verifiable significance.” In Dewey’s opinion the role of teachers are social servants. They are there to assist children on how to act appropriately on ideas they form themselves.
My students will develop a community that respects each other in the classroom as well as out of the classroom. Once these goals have been met I feel that the rest of the year will be smooth sailing! (Gallagher, 1999-2012). In the field of education, good classroom management is essential ( Froyer & Iverson, 1999) . Encouraging and establishing student self-control through a process of promoting positive student achievement and behavior is what every classroom needs.
When people think of school, a safe environment for students to learn comes to mind. Students learn knowledge happily and safety. However, when people think about gun, they always think about violence, danger and unsafe environment. Therefore, an environment for safe learning should not have guns. The school hires school security to protect the campus and they should be enough protection.
Even a novice shooter can become effective at using the weapon with minimal training. A teacher wanting to carry a sidearm should have mandated class and range time, as well as regular retraining. In addition they would have to be given a license to carry the weapon, so they don’t have to leave it in the classroom unattended. Regular physiological evaluations would make sure that the teacher is still within a sound mind and still okay to carry the gun. With teachers now carrying weapons on campus the disgruntled students would be less likely to try to bring a weapon of their own to school.
You may be thinking that teachers are unable to stand up to students or outside threats under current school conditions, but that doesn't mean we have to take these extreme measures. Since school districts want to minimize violence in schools, enhancing security would be the best option; Adding guns to a school environment will only increase the amount of violence. Despite the unruly shooting of young children in Newtown Connecticut,
In the article “Schools Wrestle with Issue of Armed Guards” it stated that, “The firearm is there to protect students from bad guys on the outside, not to use on students," Mr. Hamill said. To underscore the dangers facing schools today, he cited a campus lockdown during a pawnshop robbery near a school two years ago, and another incident in which a criminal suspect fleeing arrest entered and dashed through an elementary school” (Education Week). I agree with these quotes. Because I think the there should be armed gurads in our schools around the world. The second reason I think armed guards are good to have in school is because they supply shakedowns.
What’s the difference between a teacher and a administrator searching your locker? Teachers should be allowed to search lockers. Lockers are school property not student property. Letting teachers search lockers limits the reputation goes up because they can stop something really big from happening. But teachers should be able to search lockers if they have a reason to.
Supreme Court Decision My decision for this particular case is that Principal Morse has not violated the 1st amendment. She didn’t take Frederick’s rights away. I give her the right to punish students when violating school policy, mission, or other’s students’ rights. Students who violate in a disruptive manner, other’s rights, at school time and events related to school will be responsible for their own acts and will face the consequences. The principal is responsible to make the school mission effective, safe, under control, and give each individual their rights that the constitution provides them.
Zero Tolerance Policies Annemarie Zimzores Grand Canyon University: EDA 555 Legal Issues in Education August 27, 2014 Zero Tolerance Policies Many people are calling school districts zero tolerance policies “ridiculous.” Many school districts have zero tolerance policies with reasonable outcomes and disciplinary consequences. School safety is very important. The purpose of zero tolerance policies is to provide a safe learning environment for all students. Schools have zero tolerance for weapons, drugs, and violent behavior on school grounds. The disciplinary actions that will result from such serious offenses include suspension and expulsion.
Many people will agree that it is a college campus’s responsibilities to protect students and teachers while on the property, but where does the line between protecting the college community and taking away Constitutional rights blur? Due to the large amount of hate speech circulating around college campuses around America, colleges are having to choice between students’s right of free speech or the college communities right to be free from harassment and discrimination. I believe hate speech codes are essential for a positive learning environment on college campuses because regulations of speech; protect students and teachers, discourages racism, and allows for a more successful, civil learning environment.
