The True Leader. According to Webster’s Dictionary, a leader is someone that “Guides someone or something along the way.” I wanted to compare leadership styles of different leaders in the past who were deemed as successful leaders. How does one become known as a leader? Better yet, how does someone become known as a true leader? Because after all not all leaders are considered true leaders. Before we go any further let me tell you what qualities a “true” leader must have. Caring, integrity, and trustworthiness are three qualities that are essential for any true leader to possess. To begin with, a great leader cares about the people they are leading. Would you follow someone that didn’t care about you? The obvious answer is no. Take a look at George Washington, the first President of the United States of America. George Washington was a patriot, willing to give his life for the young country he helped found. Through his courageous acts during the Revolutionary war he demonstrated that he cared for the people, and the people respected that in him. George Washington had his principles that he followed. One of his principles was, “Do what you say and say what you mean.” He also said, “I hope I shall always possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an Honest Man.” Washington was held in the highest regards by his fellow politicians and was the only President to ever be elected unanimously not once but twice. Washington was elected for two straight terms and would have easily won his third, but he felt that too much power would have been rested on him. He walked away from power because he cared for his country and thought that if he would of accepted a third term in office, he would essentially be turning this country to a monarchy.
