A STUDY OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MORTALITY RATE AND WATER SCARCITY IN DROUGHT STRICKEN AREAS IN KENYA A CASE STUDY OF TURKANA COUNTY IN KENYA Introduction Water is life and for these reason every human being or rather every inhabitant of planet earth has a right to access water. However this is not the case in most places. This paper focuses on the issue of water scarcity in drought stricken areas in Kenya and how this relates to high mortality rate in the state. In fact, water is our past, water is our present and water is our future. Without it we cannot survive and there are no alternatives. Life is sacred and need be sustained and water aids in doing so. According to Jesse Mugambi, without water all things become meaningless. He further argues that water is a human right and for that matter rights are not for sale and therefore water should not be regarded as a marketable commodity. This is in fact true since the same water was provided by the maker of the universe since creation. Water is an essential life giving force (Elliot Curry).Its scarcity demands our attention as the human body cannot be able to make it for long without this special commodity. Elliot Curry agrees with the arguments of Jesse Mugambi that water is really important to human life. Turkana County is among the many regions in Kenya that suffers from drought a great deal and this has led to high levels of mortality rate in the county. In dealing with these issues, priority need be given to safe drinking water. Yes! There is a problem of water scarcity but of importance according to the scale of preference is the safety in drinking water. Drought is the major reason why the area suffers from scarcity of water.
