This paper tries to show how teens are faced with a high risk of car accident injuries. It also recommends proper mechanisms that can be used to counsel teens. The paper also describes suitable programs which can be applied to curb the risks of teenage driving. It proposes preventive mechanisms for parents, medical practitioners, state law legislators and other child activists. The new approaches to this problem of teen driving will be an essential tool in curbing the problems associated with it.
The drinking age should not be lowered to 18. Lowering the drinking age from 21 years old to 18 years old could lead to an increase in dangerous behavior such as drunken driving and car accidents, risk of developing alcoholism and people under the age of 21 do not fully understand the dangers of alcohol. A teenage driver and alcohol is a dangerous combination. Drinking and driving accidents are the number one cause of death among teenagers. “Traffic deaths from drunken driving have fallen steadily, with those involving teenagers 16 to 19 declining by 39.1 percent from 1982 to 1990, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)”.
TEENAGE DRIVER LICENSE RESTRICTION: GOOD OR BAD Learning to drive is known as a significant rite to passage which one of the keys to independence. Driving is an activity that involves the greatest risks for a huge number of teens. It also plays an important roles in a peer group, which shows maturity and improves the status of the teen. Teens that can’t drive are seen to be depend on the parents and other peer for mobility and narrows the options for employment. This also influences their social lives and restricts their participation in school and the community activities.

“Incidents of “road rage” were up 51% in the first half of the decade, according to a report from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety,” writes Andrew Ferguson in Road Rage (553). It’s sad that due to road rage many innocent commuters suffer the consequences. It has also happened to me while driving; because I’m driving to slow, the person behind me starts to blow the horn. And, it makes thing worse because then I will get mad and drive even slower. In Road Rage, Ferguson points out that in a recent survey that the Coalition for Consumer Health and Safety did, 64% of the people mentioned that they are driving less mannerly and more recklessly than they did about five years ago (553).

Cell phone use increases the likelihood of motor vehicle accidents The use of a cell phone while driving increases the likelihood of having an automobile accident and as such the use of cell phones in vehicles should be restricted and irresponsible drivers should be prosecuted under the letter of the law for reckless driving. Cell phones have become a commodity in our everyday lives. Some people however are taking the trend to extremes by engaging in conversations while operating a moving vehicle. This widespread phenomenon has increased the rate of motor vehicle accidents throughout the state. It is believed that actively using a cell phone while driving increases the likelihood of an accident by as much as four times the rate as those who do not use a cell phone.

Vetter and Fran Lostys, they discuss the risks and dangers surrounding teen driving. They say more than 5,000 teenagers die in car accidents every year. At the beginning of the article the authors give examples of teen deaths directly caused by teen driving. Speeding, texting while driving and other distractions played a part in the deaths.
There are also many under age drivers on the road that makes driving on the road more dangerous for them and anyone driving that day. A lot of people also die because they drive while intoxicated I would have to say that’s one of the most cause of death each year. Talking on the phone is one of the most dangerous habits because you’re not always concentrated on the road. Talking on the phone while driving is prohibited because you can get into a car wreck or make some get into one or hit someone and can cause severe injury or death. It is very prohibited to talk on the phone in school areas because there is a lot of kids walking to school or getting off of their parents vehicles to walk into school and you can hit them and severely injure them or even cause death.
And the result can be just as deadly” .Most cases, accidents are caused by children under the age 16 driving, drinking while driving, or taking on the phone and text messaging while driving. These are very dangerous to life and others. A driver's license for a teenager is a milestone and one of the biggest events in young lives. Of course the independence it gives teens is wonderful, but it can be quite frightening to a parent when one’s child drives a car. Teens will have to handle a lot of instructions and rules of the road, and they must be ready for this responsibility, so teens must take driving lessons.
