A very common problem these days is the subject of growing up. Young people have difficulties taking responsibility of their own lives. Back in time the problems teenagers face today, were only adult problems or at least problems that belongs to older people. This is one of the main themes and what the story “A Simple Exchange of Niceties” focuses on, by Joanne Fedler. The main character in this story had gotten pregnant accidently. This has a significant influence on her view of herself and others, mentally. The narrator sees herself very negative. She’s been with a boy that made her pregnant and now she’s about to have a baby. All this makes her think that she is a whore. First of all she is quite emotional: “I once saw seven black swans there, gliding together; it was like a ballet. It sort of made me cry”. This shows that she might be a bit mentally unstable as she really easily gets all emotional. “I don’t like to see people go hungry or to have to sleep in bus-shelters,” Again it shows us that she is caring and that she wants to have it worse than the surrounding individuals. The narrator doesn’t want to have too much contact with others either, she does not like the moment people pass by and asking for a spot on her bench. While sitting on her bench, she wants to be alone and claims that “When I’m sitting on my bench I’m generally not in the mood for small-talk and chit-chat”. Again it shows that she wants to be alone and that the bench makes her really think and evaluate her life in which I’ll talk more about later. As told, she wants other to feel better than herself an example of this is the old lady, that reminds her of her Nan who passed away more than ten years ago, comes to sit with her on the bench. The lady can’t have a child and she really wants one which makes the narrator want to give the lady her child. She really starts to feel with the lady,
