Gun Control “Opponents to gun control laws argue ‘guns don’t kill people, people kill people”’(ProQuest Staff). Gun Violence is a major problem in the United States today considering the current gun control regulations are ineffective; however, laws can be made to accommodate for this and still allow the citizens to protect themselves from danger. “The role of guns in violence, and what should be done, are subjects of intense debate in the United States and elsewhere” (Webster). The people who have either seen, heard, or read news stories on gun policies might have come to the conclusion that mass shootings, the mentally ill, and assault weapons are the primary concerns in the debates; gun control laws disarm law-abiding citizens and fail
Law & Policy, 5(3), 271-298. These gentleman argue that the mere sight of a gun can elicit aggression. They also go on to say that “guns are useless for self-defense or protection of one's family”, and that they will have no deterrent effect on criminals. Murray, D. R. (1975). Handguns, gun control laws and firearm violence.
7) The law was required for 32 states; the other 18 + The District of Columbia already had regulations like this so they were exempt from the law requirements. 8) The law was opposed by many congressmen who would look to the Second Amendment, and thought that it wasn’t constitutional because of the way it restricted the regulation of ownership of handguns. B: Effects of the Brady Bill 1) "Control and treatment states had the same gun homicide rates before and after the Brady law passed," Cook said. "It made no discernible difference. There is no statistically significant effect."
Kristen Rand, the Director of the Violence Policy Center, argues “[c]oncealed carry permit holders don't prevent mass shootings, they perpetrate them” (Carmi Times, 2011). The problem with this statement isn’t that it is incorrect, but rather it’s completely irrelevant. Of course, when murders are committed with handguns, a certain percentage of offenders are individuals who hold concealed-carry permits. This, however, is not an appropriate indictment of concealed carry laws. Using this logic, citizens would be denied the ability to drive cars because drunk drivers use them to kill people.
Jennie Kartchner English 1010 Bryce Dixon Tuesday/Thursday 11/13/2010 Gun Control: Are we violating the Second Amendment? Gun control, as we know it, consists of the government restricting the ability of individual citizens to purchase weapons. The different types of gun control vary from waiting periods between when you purchase the gun and when you actually get it, background checks so that high-risk people can't purchase guns through legal channels, and completely banning certain types of guns. With the Second Amendment giving American citizens the right to bear arms, and approximately fifty percent of Americans owning some form of a firearm, issues involving the ownership and possession of guns
Gun Control I do not believe in gun control. In this paper, I am going to tell you why I believe that gun control is not necessary. I hope that I am able to persuade you in this paper to believe that guns should not be controlled. In my opinion, hunting would be much more difficult because you could not use certain guns, and this is not fair to the hunter. In my research of this topic, I have found a lot of political debates in which many political figures are found saying they are on one side or the other.
"The world is filled with violence. Because criminals carry guns, decent law-abiding citizens should also have guns. Otherwise they will win and the decent people will lose." (James Earl Jones, Online). Banning all or some weapons is not the solution to decreasing the increased gun related violence in the United States.
It is goes a step further to make those type of magazines illegal to own, and does not allow them to be grandfathered as with weapons allowed. Many gun owners will be required by law to register their weapons with the federal government under the National Firearms Act. Opposite of the 1994 AWB, the new will dictates that upon death of the registered owners of the weapon(s), the weapon(s) must be forfeited to the government, and can not be passed on. This has brought up more debate about weapons considered to be of value to the families for reason of sentiment, or
To undergo a background check, prospective gun buyers are required by federal regulations to present, “photo identification issued by a government entity.” It is illegal and punishable by up to 10 years in prison to sell or transfer any firearm or ammunition to someone while “knowing” or having “reasonable cause to believe” that the person is convicted of a felony offense. Background checks have blocked more than 1.6 million prohibited purchasers from buying guns. Background checks only do so much, because criminals don’t go to stores to buy guns, but go through the black market were they obtain basically what they want. Besides the black market, criminals also obtain weapons through loop holes such as family and friends, private sellers, and gun shows, where they do not need to go through any background
Bobby Wrench National Government September 18, 2012 Gun control The definition of gun control is any law, policy, practice, or proposal designed to restrict or limit the possession, production, importation, shipment, sale, and use of guns or other firearms by private citizens. Most commonly the guns in question are personal firearms, typically handguns and long guns. I am for gun control because I feel that guns are not for everyone. Certain people cannot handle firearms and certain individuals tend to misuse them. Firearms are not something to be played with.
