Sammy was able to draw conclusions about the girls that were walking around the store such as calling one of the girls “the queen” just based on the way she looked and acted. Although not as detailed, while working I often look at the people who are shopping and draw conclusions such as what kind of job I think they have or how many kids I think they have. The final aspect that I can relate to is the part of the story where Sammy gets annoyed with his boss and quits. Sammy doesn’t like the way that his boss, Lengel, talks to the girls and in an attempt to impress them, quits his job. I would never have the courage to quit my job and tell my boss that they were not treating someone right but I have thought about it before.
It then becomes easy for the reader to understand why the unnamed man chooses to read in the store, because despite all Fat Maz's soul searching and her father's bad temper, the newsagency is actually a very place with a homey feel. Also a familiar place the reader can relate
Sammy is a very relatable character in that he makes a very human and juvenile choice of quitting something for no good reason. This character takes little thought into account in regards to the consequences of his actions. After he quits he is given a chance to stay with his job by his boss but his choice to follow through is driven by his ego. Ego is something that many individuals get stuck into and young people are the best examples; often they make choices because of what other people might think instead of because it is best for them. The story concludes with Sammy being alone, he is now looking in at something he is no longer a part of ,the A&P, while thinking about something he will never be a part of ,Queenies life.
Scout tried to resist her father but since Atticus was a well-respected man to both his peers and families, Scout followed his orders. “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anyone says to you, don’t let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change…it’s a good one, even if it does resist learning.” (76) A good father would teach his
Lastly, his last dilemma is he has a hard time deciding wether or not he is going to help Daisy when she finds out about Tom. Those are only a few of the dilemmas that Nick faced. I came up with a self improvement plan though to help Nick out with his every day struggles that he faces in his new town. I think that Nick has been over-stressing himself. What Nick needs to realize though is that all of the peer pressure that is going on should not bother him, he shouldn't let it ruin his focus on his work.
In the beginning of the story he is somewhat immature in the ways he views life. He is a daydreamer, which is shown numerous times in his talk of the three young girls. He is selfish when he quits his job with no regard to how it will affect his parents who may have to support him now or Lengel who has had to take over his job as cashier. Sammy show a sympathetic side by getting upset when Queenie becomes embarrassed, he also shows devotion by sticking to his decisions even after he realizes they were not wrong. By the end of this story Sammy shows how his characteristics have changed from that of a young man with no worries to that of a man by realizing how hard life would be on him and everyone who loves
A&P Analysis John Hoyer Updike’s short story “A&P” shows an eighteen-year-olds’ point of view of a 1960’s era grocery store. The dynamic protagonist, Sammy, explains the mundane lifestyles of the customers in the store based on his observations from the checkout counter. Suddenly the store is disrupted by three girls that enter the store wearing only bathing suits and defy the organization of the business. Sammy wants to change his cookie cutter lifestyle; after observing the girls, he realizes he does not have to conform to the social standards he was lead to believe. Sammy observes the patrons of A&P mundanely going about their shopping, like “sheep pushing their carts down the aisle” (6).
