A Message Without Words Kimberly Clark CGD 218 Visual Literacy in Business Tony Sgarlatti May 13, 2011 A Message Without Words “Visual communication is the communication through visual aid and is described as the conveyance of ideas and information in forms that can be read or looked upon and relies partly or wholly on vision” (Wikipedia, 2008). In my Visual Literacy in Business course, I’ve learned that visual images play an important role in how we respond to things such as newspapers, commercials, billboards, movies and so forth. Typography, signs, colors, shapes and symbols are a few of the images that are used to send messages to the people who view them”. We are able to relate more closely to images than we are words. We are able to develop our own interpretation of a message and form our own ideas and opinions when viewing an image; therefore, visual communication affects us more directly and emotionally. I created a design to send a message to people that in order to succeed in life you have to leave behind negativity and move forward feeling positive about yourself. I will briefly discuss the visual elements used in my design, how each approach is effective in getting my message across , and which approach is greatly effective in my design. Typography is printed art. Important factors to look at when creating a design are the size of type, colors and contrast, spacing and margins, and unity. In creating my poster, I used typography as my first approach. I used different sized text to put emphasis on certain words to create an emotional response. The size of font that I used for the positive words are larger than the negative words. I placed greater weight on several words within the negative and positive to signify the importance of those words. Using spacing and direction, the negative words are positioned behind the positive words. They
