The poem “Desert Places” by Robert Frost tells of the narrators lonely feelings while he is observing a snow-covered field. As the narrator continues, the reader can that the narrator is reflecting upon his own emptiness, when looking at the vast emptiness of the landscape. This makes it possible for the reader to infer that the narrator is a lonely person. You can also infer that winter has just started because he says that the snow is falling, but in line four of the first stanza it says “But a few weeds and stubble showing last”. You can conclude that the narrator is scared of his own loneliness when he says in line four of stanza four “To scare myself with my own desert places”. There are many other poetic devices used in this poems such as tone, diction, syntax , sound , imagery, and rhyming and meter patterns. “Desert Places” is four stanzas long. Each stanza is four lines long. The Rhythm pattern for this poem is AABA. An example of this is in the first stanza. Snow falling and night falling fast, oh, fast In a field I looked into going past, And the ground almost covered smooth in snow, But a few weeds and stubble showing last The last words in lines one, two, and four all rhyme. This pattern continues throughout the entire four stanzas. The poem uses imagery to stimulate the readers’ senses. In The first stanza: “Snow falling and night falling” should activate sight of snow and maybe even the feel of it. Still in the first stanza, the narrator describes the snow again by saying “ground covered with smooth snow. This should give the reader a sense of feeling smooth snow on the ground. The narrator also provides the reader with personification. At the end of the third stanza it says: A blanker whiteness of benighted snow With no expression, nothing to express This provides imagery with an image of white snow. Also, the personification also
