A good name is better than riches This is a proverb, in common use, indicating the worth of an unsullied name whose value is beyond estimation. It is as much as to say that even the poorest man with a clean name can stand erect in front of the richest and most powerful individual who has managed to earn these things by crude means. No one can challenge this individual whereas the other will tremble and cringe as he is incapable of passing this test of character. It is the greatest benefit of having a name without any blemish. He can say bravely, “I have the strength of many men because I possess a good name.” Let us examine the main features that go to make an undefiled name. Honesty and truthfulness, rational behaviour in defence of justice, equal treatment of everyone irrespective of one’s social standing, punctuality, humility and high moral rectitude are the essential concomitance of a good name. A person who has moulded his character in accordance with these qualities is indeed one who has a good name. Keeping a good name is not as easy as amassing wealth or power.
