GAP YEAR It is true that some young people who have finished their school or college and before going to university wants to take a gap year. In recent years, there has been increased of interest of taking a gap year among young people form several countries. Putting into an account, that it is beneficial taking a gap year in order to have working experience or travelling or related educational training is fair enough. While, some of are disagree that it is waste of time. However, encouraging them to do it can also have certain detrimental influence in their life, either in good way or in bad way. This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decided to do and also analysis the effect of persuading young people to do. It also looks at the issues surrounding accreditation of such schemes. First of all, I would like to briefly expose the history of ‘a gap year’. From the research (Wikipedia, a gap year history) I have found that the practice of taking a gap year had developed in the United Kingdom in 1960s. In 1978, the Prince of Wales and Colonel John Blashford-Snell (former British Army) first lunched an Operation Drake as known as Raleigh International to expedition voyage around the world. In 1980 Cornelius H. Bull who invigorated ‘a gap year’ in United States. And then gradually, it has become popular in Australia, New Zealand and Canada as well. Now days all over the world of countries of students commonly known about a gap years. Now, my concern is that why these countries accepted ‘a gap year’ and also some of the other countries are starting to encourage students to take year off before entering college or university. This is because these countries believe that taking a gap year can actually make more ready and batter-prepared students for the college or university.
