As James quoted in the novel, “one can only handle so much fear”. Ishmael has been able to make more friends that get a stronger bond throughout the novel. During Ishmael’s time in the debating team, Ishmael gained confidence in himself, he also made some friends on the way that he wouldn’t have been able to have without his self-assurance. It’s important to make the right choice of friends, and that’s what Ishmael did. He found out that Orazio gets bullied too, but razza uses humour to dodge Barry’s comments.
Ishmael is a bit of an outcast in the School society, he starts off having no friends but after the arrival of James Scobie and being forced into the debating team. He makes a little group of friends with people that are outcasts like him. Ishmael doesn’t greatly represent good or evil, he is neutral in sorts. This is because the typical ‘Good’ character stands up for what he believes in and stands up for his friends, whilst Ishmael hides from his problems and doesn’t stand up for his beliefs. Near the end of the book Ishmael does show some signs of being a ‘Good Guy’ though.
John grew up known as the ‘trouble maker’ and was often shunned because his disability Asperger’s’s was not known about by many people at the time. Over time John has learned “what people expect in common social situations. So [he] can act more normal and there’s less chance [he’ll] offend anyone” (11). Charlie from Keyes’ Flowers for Algernon is a middle aged man that is not accepted by society because like John he has a disability. Charlie is not shunned by people but is often the center of their jokes unknowingly.
Sometimes their heads aren’t in the right place, only thinking about partying or just overworking themselves and stressing over an overload of work. Basically students don’t reach their full potential in most cases. Motivation or ambition is the key to a student successfully graduating or it also could be their downfall. The select few students, who have ambition to do well in school would take advantage of all the resources the school would be providing. Such as, tutoring, getting books from the library, and seeing professors for extra help or one on one time.
I had my own dreams of transformation…”(8). By hanging out with bad friends, it influences Toby to be more like them. This is because to him, his friends are important to him and he does not want to risk losing them. The crowd he spends time with and the events he does with them take him farther from who he truly is deep inside. Toby’s position in feeling like a fraud, in having emptiness within himself, and finding himself shows how difficult his life can be.

I think that this is a good example of teamwork and how it can help the community. They say power corrupts, but his friend helps out and cares for those less fortunate and this story made me feel better about the rich people because it shows that they still care about the lower class people. I think that Damone Hale should come back for future semesters because for students who want to be lawyers or attorneys that this is a good person to learn about the trade with. He’s someone who isn’t corrupted and he has a lot of experience with criminal cases. I personally didn’t get much out of his lecture because I’m looking to be a counselor, but I think he’d be very inspiring person for those who are interested in law or for those who don’t have a
For example, Lewis’ experience with the patients, changes him and teaches him more about life than his entire university education. At the beginning, Lewis is only interested in earning some money and is worried about what may occur if ‘someone [forgot] to take their medication’. Rather than making decisions, he tends to try to please other people by agreeing to whatever they want him to do. Even his political beliefs appear to simply be based on those of Nick and Lucy. However as he works with the patients, he develops a new perspective and insight into certain matters and himself.
