Analyse how the beginning establishes key concerns and how the ending concludes them. In A Beautiful Mind directed by Ron Howard an important theme shown throughout the beginning and ending of the film is the importance and power of love and friendship. Some techniques that Ron Howard used to portray this message throughout the film are point of view, parallels and symbols and motifs. Though the use of these techniques we are able to understand the ideas much more clearly. Howard uses point of view to make us aware of the importance and power of love and friendship. The audience is shown this in the beginning as it is all John Nash’s point of view and because he is desperate for friendship, this has put stresses on his social life therefore he has developed schizophrenia. Nash’s mind has then created Charles as a delusional character. This technique of point of view leads the audience onto believing Charles is real and that John Nash has a fun and bubbly roommate, in a total contrast to Nash’s personality. The beginning of the film ended in the scene where Nash and his friends are having drinks at the bar after he was told he could get the job at Wheeler Laboratory. The ending of the film begins when Nash goes back to Princeton University and asks Hansen if he can stick around the University. The point of view that Ron Howard uses at this stage of the film is neutral as we are no longer hidden by the truth. The audience get to see the situation from Nash, Hansen as well as Alicia’s point of view therefore we get many different perspectives of Nash. This is illustrated in the scene when Nash asks Hansen to linger around the university in order to feel a sense of connection within the community. At this time Charles one of Nash’s delusional characters is standing in the doorway of Hansen’s office giving Nash orders “tell him you’re a genius John”. Point of view
