A Balanced Psychology and a Full Life The essay “A Balanced Psychology and a Full Life,” by Seligman et.al., discusses the research which has happened, and is still happening to determine what can be done to help make people happier. Since World War II, the majority of Psychology research has centered on helping cure mental illness. The reason for this, is due to the fact the majority of grants were issued to fund the then recently established National Institute of Mental Health. Through the fifty years of focus on disease and pathology, researchers developed psychotherapy or pharmacology to treat twelve disorders and cure two. Before World War II, one of the objectives of American psychology was to “make relatively untroubled people happier” (Seligman). Much of the wealth of information gathered while trying to treat and cure mental disorders can also be used to determine what leads to positive psychology. “The ultimate goal of positive psychology is to make people happier by understanding and building positive emotion, gratification and meaning” (Seligman). Through study, psychologist have determined that there are exercises’ which help to make people happier and the and the positive emotions from the exercises’ practiced have lasting effects for up to three months. To help the estimated seventy percent of the population who aren’t battling mental illness, but also may not be living their life as happily as possible, researchers must determine what happiness is. The question of what happiness is, is quite possibly the most written about philosophical question of all time. Through review of literature it was determined that the three components of happiness are pleasure, engagement and meaning.
