I have recently, in the past few years, realized how much I enjoy helping people and animals grow stronger and happier. I think of volunteering as being a fun way to meet new people and a way to feel fulfilled and proud of yourself for making a difference.
At ARF, a no-kill animal shelter in Walnut Creek, I help socialize cats so that they can be adopted into loving and caring homes. I enjoy doing this because it is fun and I like to contribute to rescuing and saving animals that become abused, abandoned, and homeless. I decided I wanted to volunteer at ARF because my parents don’t want pets, so I go there to nourish my love of animals, otherwise, I’d go crazy! By socializing cats, I help myself by staying happy and I also help the cats by getting them used to people and being loved.
One of my favorite things to do on Saturdays is to go to CTA, or Catholic Teens in Action, a youth group based at St. Isidore’s Church in Danville. I got into this youth group after my previous history teacher, Mrs. Croshal, who runs the program, told us about it and encouraged us to come. There is a group of us who go and help people on Saturday mornings, later, we do something fun, like see a movie or go ice skating, and then lastly, we go to mass. One of my favorite things we do is visit the elderly nuns. We’ll play bingo with them and it is really fun to hear all of their stories. I love how you can see in their faces how excited they are to see us when we walk into the room, it’s like they were asleep and then they awaken completely when they see us, but its really sad when we have to leave and they go back to their slumber until we, or another group, come to visit them again.
Another thing we did at CTA that I enjoyed was write letters to unwed mothers who are keeping their babies. We also helped sort baby things, such as clothes and bottles, to give to the mothers. Although we never met them, I knew that they would be very thankful to know that there is a...
