The Sudan government has and continues to violate almost all of the outlined rights in the Declaration of Human Rights. The genocide that has been allowed to occur in Darfur (a western region of Sudan) for more than fifteen years lead the United States to declare that “what was happening there constituted genocide” (Bloomfield, Butler). The barbaric killing of children and women in addition to their rape and enslavement has gone on unstopped for countless years. Not only has the right to live been stripped from thousands of Sudan’s people, the right to freedom has as well. The genocide has claimed more than 400,000 civilians and displaced 2.5 million people from their homes.
Rebel groups justified attacking government targets in Darfur early in 2003 stating that Khartoum was neglecting the area. The Sudanese government has continued to violate Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person. The continued government air raids have killed thousands and displaced countless more. By not only allowing, but actually funding and carrying out these unthinkable acts the government has completely violated the Third Article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The Third Article is surely not the first or last that the government of Sudan has violated. After decimating the villages with air raids the government continues to destroy the rights of its people. The Sudanese government openly funds the Janjaweed militiamen. The Janjaweed are typically members of Arab tribes who have long been at odds with the non-Arab African farmers of Darfur. For a bargain price the Sudanese Army offers the Janjaweed a monthly salary and a gun in exchange for joining a cohort whose funding comes primarily from the bounty gotten from raiding villages.
