Waiting for Godot is a way for Beckett to criticize literature. He tries to deconstruct the meaning of words, and image that is created by them. Lucky’s speech does that as well as he makes fun of the formal debate language, and references to literary critics. We also fail to know who or what Godot, and Beckett hints that his neither name nor any other name really matters at all. Becket also suggests that those trying to find meaning shouldn’t for there is nothing to be done. An example of a character that does not really have any expectations is Lucky, who is the servant of Pozzo. Becket stays again and again that every experience goes for great to bad, so Lucky who does not look in the future, or in the past is actually better off than the other characters. Becket also states that other people believe that those around them have attained some other meaning that they are looking for, and that only they are stuck at zero. Becket also focuses on human relationships. He states that we are dependent on each other that we complete each other. In addition we all need guidance, a voice to help them guide the vast maze that is life. Lucky finds this voice in Pozzo. Pozzo does not want Lucky to follow him around for he too also wants to find a commanding voice. We can see this when he asks Vladimir to ask him to sit down, and he asks if anyone had heard of his name. In the second act where Pozzo is blind and is now dependent upon Lucky to a certain degree cries and complains. Lucky however understands that nothing changes, and thus does not take advantage of his new situation with Pozzo, in fact he ends up turning completely dumb which effectively makes him an unfit character to be relied on by Pozzo because he cannot speak words. Pozzo in a sense is almost happy that he is blind because he now is able to call out for help in the same way that he asks to be told to sit down. Becket also creates a sense of uncertainty that Pozzo is actually blind.
