Stalin’s Five Year’s Plans were designed to strengthen the USSR’s economy to make the nation self-sufficient. Although economy and industry was improved through Stalin’s plans, they also resulted in disaster throughout Russia. Each of his plans were to focus on capital goods, consumer goods, agriculture, transportation, communication, health, welfare, and education. The Five Year Plans proved successful in industrializing Russia and greatly increasing industrial output which improved the economy. However, the Five Year Plans resulted in the liquidation of an entire class of people when Stalin instituted the idea of collectivization in his attempt to increase agricultural production. Despite the fact that the enhancements in industrialization led to a modernized Russia, the workers were maltreated and forced to work longer and harder than what they were used to and famine broke out, completely devastating the USSR. Stalin’s Five Year Plans, although successful in increasing Russia’s industrial output and modernizing the country, had disastrous affects on the country and led to the deaths of millions of people.
Stalin estimated that Russia was fifty to a hundred years behind more advanced country’s industries in Europe. He pushed the idea that if Russia did not catch up to them in ten years it would perish. His plan was a success and steel production improved by four hundred percent, making Russia the leading producer of steel in Europe and completely surpassing Stalin’s original goals. Production was also improved or even quadrupled in the areas of industrial output, agricultural production, and oil. Despite these improvements, many issues resulted from this rapid increase in production. Because of the rapid rate at which products were produced, their quality was suspect. Also, Stalin’s plan failed to improve the standard of living, which was rapidly declining, and housing was poor and in short supply.   Factories that were unable to keep up with Stalin’s demands...
