The speaker of the song “Spies” by Coldplay discusses the current conditions of his life and how he is emotionally stressed. It is often mentioned in the lyrics that the “spies hide out in every corner” or “come out of the water”. This recognizes the fact that the speaker is living under some sort of a controlling government with little or no freedom. To mention that there are spies everywhere gives the idea that the speaker has no privacy and if caught committing an act considered sinful by the spies, would then have to face some sort of consequence. Therefore, the speaker “cannot sleep from fear” and lives his life in fear under the government’s rule. The speaker however explains how he has “no peace of mind” and “cannot see so clear” because he is confused at whether he should follow under the government’s rule or go against it because he knows its wrong. Throughout the song the speaker is afraid the spies might hear his thoughts because they’re everywhere, but then realizes “they’re just spies”. This implies that the speaker realizes his thoughts are only for himself and no one can control his mind, even if they have physical control over him. He has full control over his mind and knows who he is inside, and in this way he is still able to keep a hold of his identity, because it reminds him of who he really is.
In the song “Spies”, the speaker makes a transition from being uncertain and scared in the beginning to a more confident person. The speaker talks of how the “spies hide out in every corner” or “ spies come out of the water” he knows that he is constantly being watched and that one wrong move could cost him everything. He compares himself and all the others like him to “fugitives” because only fugitives have to be careful not to get caught and our speaker is the same since he has to be careful not to get caught doing something wrong. It’s also mentioned that “they’re all spies” so the speaker is too scared to trust anyone and “cannot sleep...
