1.2 State your opinion about the topic. (This is your statement)
e.g. War can only end in destruction. Smoking is deadly.

1.3 What are 3 things that support your statement? (Let’s use, “smoking is deadly” as an example)
e.g. 1) it physically harms everyone around the smoker  kind of a strong point
      2) it only leads to loss of money            weakest point
      3) it physically harms the smoker            strongest point

1.4 Now just bring your statement and your supporting ideas together to make your thesis.
(Topic + Opinion + 3 supporting ideas)
e.g. Smoking is deadly due to the fact that it is physically harmful to everyone around
the smoker, it leads to a large loss of money, and it is physically damaging to the smoker.

(Now go on to section 3)

Section 2: If you are given a topic and an opinion.  Most likely for the SSAT test.
Given: Smoking is deadly.  the given will be longer on the SSAT test.

2.1 Now think: Do you agree or disagree with the statement?

2.2 Say you decide that you agree with the statement. Now think of 3 things that support why you agree. (this goes back to the part in section 1.3)

2.3 Now you can make your thesis by combining your statement and 3 supporting ideas.
e.g. Smoking is deadly due to that fact that it is physically harmful to everyone around
the smoker, it leads to a large loss of money, and it is physically damaging to the smoker.
