Directed by Jared and Jerusha Hess and staring Jon Heder, Napoleon Dynamite is a film that has many (unnecessary) subplots leading up to the one main plot. The film revolves around Napoleon Dynamite, his friends, his family and their lives.
While Napoleon Dynamite is supposed to be set in present day (the song that Napoleon dances to at the end give it away), the town in which Napoleon lives in (like Napoleon himself) is a little out of touch with the rest of the world. The songs played at the school dance are from the 80’s including the original version of Forever Young and Time After Time, and the dresses worn are also quite out of date. This also includes the clothes and hairstyles that everyone are wearing in their everyday lives.
Napoleon starts off as a monotonous geek who is so geeky that he actually thinks it’s cool and even accentuates this fact by dressing up like one (tucked-in t-shirts with high waisted jeans) and acting like one (making up stories about hunting wolverines).
The first time we see Napoleon on the screen, he is off-centre and slouching, showing us that his character is awkward and bored. A low angle shot is used when he was waiting for the bus by himself, but the moment the bus comes and Napoleon is not alone anymore we see him through a high angle shot. This shows that he feels superior and confident… when he is alone. In the classroom, we see him drawing in his folder instead of working, further emphasising his boredom, and as he stands up his bright blue T-shirt is extremely noticeable, and like Napoleon himself, it stands out.
Pedro, the new student at the school, seems to lack a personality as well as emotions, and speaks and acts in monotone just like Napoleon, which could be why they immediately become best friends. He runs for class president, which is the main plot of the film. Everything beforehand leads up to it.
