Dear journal,

Today I woke up to the sound of our rooster and I stumbled out of my bed of straw. I looked outside at the sun and realized I was late for school. I put on my clothes that I had worn yesterday because my other pair is full of mud. My family cannot afford to buy me any more than two pairs of clothes. If I did not mention earlier Brice Gilchrist my father is a farmer who barely makes enough to put food on the table. Even though we can barely afford to live my father can save enough money for himself to gamble and go bear baiting. Which makes me mad. Anyhow I put on my clothes and had to skip breakfast because I was running so late. It’s not like I was missing much anyways. I kissed my mom goodbye as I ran out of the house before I missed school. School was boring like always and I was almost about to fall asleep. Until Johnny put a toad in Isabel’s desk. She opened her desk freaked out and then she screamed so loud I thought my ears were about to burst. The whole class laughed and laughed until the teacher demanded who was responsible. Everyone pointed at Johnny and he got his punishment. The teacher smacked him with the paddle so hard that I was sure you could hear all the way in London. The rest of the school day went by pretty fast. When I got home I had to do chores. I had to help my father on the farm while my mom tried to keep the house clean, which is hard because we have a dirt floor. When supper came all we had to eat was beans and some of the other vegetables dad grew on the farm. I was thirsty so I asked my parents if I could have a drink of water and they said I could. I had to ask because my parents said if I wand water I have to ask because it is so hard to get. After dinner I went up to bed. I told my mother and father goodnight and headed for bed.
