We most clearly encounter each part of our souls when we’re faced with a difficult choice. Cardinal virtues are essential, basic virtues that provide optimal functioning for the human soul. (Plato)
I viewed the movie “Butterfly Effect 2”. This movie reflected a lot of what Plato said about having a healthy, good or virtuous soul, not because the movie showed how to live a virtuous life but the mistakes we often do or say that effect us with having a virtuous life. The main character in the movie displayed poor “cardinal virtues” in which resulted in a never ending life that was not a “happy ending”. We are often faced with difficulty in life and really never stopped to think what we would do or say based on our true virtues in life. Are they good virtues or bad? That’s not until this character in the movie has the ability to change the past, based on his virtues he was not able to function and find happiness because the things he wanted didn’t go hand and hand.
The character in the movie discovers that he has the paranormal power to change the past and save the girl he lost in a crash. Based on the four cardinals there was no way he could live a happy life with the virtues he was basing his life on. One of the virtues is temperance, which is explained as self-control and moderation. The main character had no moderation for what he wanted in life. He wanted everything now from the perfect job, the girlfriend and the happy ending and he was going to do anything to get it. There was no self-control in his actions and there for the things he wanted so badly backed fired on him. He thought by changing the past with the things he wanted now would make him happy but instead hurt him and others in the end.
The second virtue is Courage. Basically the character didn’t have the courage to face the lost of his girlfriend, so instead he was opt to change it no matter if it ended up hurting everyone around him. He thought he had the will power to change...
