Being an On-Purpose Person
IS YOUR LIFE FILLED, YET UNFULFILLED? Do you feel pulled in a thousand different directions? Are your days and weeks so busy you hardly have time to think? Does your schedule seem totally out of control? Have you been trying to live up to everyone else's expectations while your own plans and dreams go unfulfilled? During the spring break, I read the book “The On-Purpose Person”, by Kevin W. McCarthy. I was intrigued by this book, even though I'm not a fan of self-fulfillment type books. I found it very interesting and extremely helpful. It reinforced a lot of different principles I knew to be true, but gave me some new ways to apply those principles. I read it twice during the spring break. Trough reading the book, I found three chapters that really helps my real life and my mind; they are Effective and Efficient, Choices and Risks, and True Success.
First of all, book talks about how to manage your life effective and efficient. “The time which we have at our disposal every day is elastic: the passions that we feel expand it, those that we inspire contract it, and habit fills what remains.” (P57). To me, "Efficient" is defined as working without waste or using a minimum of time, effort and expense. But, the definition is silent about the goals of the operation. A person can be very efficient at what they are doing but still not get to where they want to be because they aren't doing the right things. That's where "effective" comes in. "Effective" means "having the desired result". Once the desired overall result is defined, the tasks leading to the result can be isolated and these tasks can then be completed efficiently. While this seems obvious, actual execution of tasks in many companies doesn't follow this simple principle. Often, we do a lot of things very efficiently but lose sight of where we're going. Efficiency is the last thing we need; identifying the goals and the tasks which will be effective in getting us there...
