Philosophy is the pursuit of wisdom and a search for values and reality. In the Gospel According to Luke, Jesus reflects this. Jesus’ philosophy is that man should not only keep the letter of the law but the spirit as well. There are several examples in the text that illustrate this. The most important are healing on the Sabbath, fear, and the Kingdom of God.
In the first example, Jesus demonstrates that one should keep the spirit as well as the letter of the law by healing on the Sabbath day. The book of Luke 13:14 states “And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the Sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” Jesus knew that by him healing on the Sabbath day, he would be disobeying the letter of the law but he also knew that by the standards of his philosophy that he was doing the right thing. Jesus was setting an example for men to see how important it is to also keep the spirit of the law along with the letter of the law. Jesus further emphasizes on the importance of the Sabbath day when he proclaimed “That the Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath.”(6:5)
In the second example, the fact that Jesus believed that one should keep the spirit as well as the letter of the law in regards to the aspect of fear. Jesus places a tremendous amount of value on the life of all. Jesus also felt as though one should not go through life fearing those that can only do physical harm. The book of Luke 12:4, Jesus states “And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.” Jesus implies that there are higher powers that one need be worry about or fear that can cause harm after the physical is gone, and only the spiritual remains.
