A Virtuoso Series Concert - Scott Turpen, Saxophone

Scott Turpen's jazz saxophone concert was an impressive performance that displayed the years of commitment put into this field of study. Since he served as the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Wyoming, he performed extremely well as he improvised during the night. Since this was my first jazz music concert, I did not know what to expect when I first entered the auditorium and honestly thought I would regret paying the admission fee to take part in the experience. Later realizing that this was quite the bargain, an incredible performance unfolded throughout the evening that amazed all who came to listen.
Even though it was very cold night to walk, I arrived at the University Center for the Arts, Griffin Concert Hall at 7:30 on September 26th, just in time to sit myself and prepare for tonight’s performance. Scott Turpen and Teresa Bogard, the pianist accompanist, walked out and introduced themselves. Afterwards, they began to play.
His first piece was Phil Woods' Sonata. I found the beginning surprising and relaxing at the same time. The music playing was very creative as he progressed; the motifs and rhythm were fluttery and complex. As I thought about what musical terms I need to put in my paper, I listened for vibratos first. He would vibrato on the last note of each measure. I enjoyed this piece the most because it was calm and slow. But as I relaxed, I listened for dynamics, the harmony between the piano and saxophone, but mostly the vibratos.
The next piece was Jindrich Feld's Sonata for soprano saxophone and piano. When I read the title, I expected something nice and slow, but the beginning of the piece sounded very messy. It sounded as if they were not on the same page of music. As the piece progressed, I found that it seemed to portray a more balanced emotional effect on the audience.
