The Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) is an organization that researches crime and justice across the country generating statistical reports to inform policy and practice. As a Commonwealth based institute the AIC aims to diminish crime rates and support justice through research that is specified by the Attorney-Generals Office. The AIC’s research primarily is conveyed through conferences, seminars and publishing the research found.

The research that the AIC undertakes is governed by the Criminology Research Act 1971 and is primarily centered around crime from collecting statistics, monitoring different crimes, conducting evaluations of crime prevention strategies, alerting key stakeholders of developments in criminological research and conducting new research projects.

From the research that the AIC undertakes it is accountable for many different crime and justice related projects. There are two main categories that the AIC’s research falls into two categories:

  1. National monitoring programs
The national monitoring programs cover criminal activity such as homicide, firearms theft, armed robbery, drug use, deaths in custody, police custody, juveniles in detention, fraud against the Commonwealth, anti-money laundering and human trafficking.
  2. Crime and justice projects
However, the crime and justice projects cover criminal activity such as violent crime, drugs, transnational and organized crime, economic and high tech crime, the criminal justice system, and capacity building.
