Being holy is much harder today than it was in the sixties, simply because society has lost interest in religion and now material possessions and our social lives appear to be much more dominant than the church. During the first half of the last century, it was a tradition that families as a whole attended church together. Now fewer children seem to be attending Sunday school nowadays, and not many grow up in the family’s church of choice. Church seems to be more of a hassle and because of laziness many do not attend anymore; all you have to do is take 1 hour of your week and devote it to god: The fact that that is so hard to do for some sickens me.
With innovations such as the internet which include social networking sites, teenagers get lost in the hype and are on the computer for hours updating facebook, tweeting and checking form spring or YouTube. Cell phones have also taken a bit of humanity out of us teens; for us our possessions seem to be our “Gods” and our whole days are based around media. This is a large reason why it is much harder to be holy today than it was in the sixties: media is much more dominant in our lives today than it was back then. Television shows are much more provocative and send much worse messages than back then.   Comparing a TV show from then to now shows just how much our society has changed: a popular show in the 60’s was The Patty Duke Show (a light-hearted look at the comedic misadventures of two pretty high school girls, both aged sixteen & identical cousins. The series was not only popular with teens but also with the critics). A popular show today is Gossip Girl (a look into the scandalous lives of manhattans elite: tales of lust, money and “fame”). These shows both represent what is and was once popular with teens; this shows that our thoughts towards issues have changed and a light hearted sitcom would no longer get good ratings but would get cancelled instantly.
