UC Essay Prompt 2: Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are.


“Go play with the kids!” she screamed.

“Ma, you know I love the Junie B. Jones series.”

“So you want to be alone and friendless forever?” she spat in my face.

I wasn't playing with the other children because I wanted to hide them from my crazy family. Years later, though, I am able to stand tall with my chin up despite where I came from, and my rough upbringing has increased my ability to nurture those who are still afraid of themselves.

During our mixers in Girl Scouts I approached girls who seem to be isolated from the larger group. One of these girls was Catherine. With chin down, eyes on the floor, and a book in hand, I knew she was exactly who I used to be. When the group began mingling, I approached her. I found that we went to the same school and were in the same grade, yet I had never met her. As time went on, we grew a strong bond. I introduced her to my group of friends, and she felt more comfortable interacting in a big group, but more importantly, felt comfortable with herself. I saw her evolve into a bold person, approaching others with a big smile and head held high.

We are not all born social butterflies, but with a little nudge and some love, people can surprise you. As Audrey Hepburn once said, “People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, and redeemed. Never throw out anyone.” Sometimes we just need someone to help us change for the better. Helping younger children to feel more comfortable with themselves and their abilities is a passion I will carry with me to college.
