Violence In Tv

Submitted by theblades on May 18, 2008

In 1950’s, a device called the television, or the T.V., as it is called nowadays, was invented. It would change the lives of people everywhere. But not necessarily for the better. You see, people would make programs on these T.V.’s, called shows, and these shows would have violence in them. The violence would be minimal, at first, but then it would begin to increase at an alarming rate. “Coincidentally”, the crime rate would also go up. For example, violence in T.V. has risen 141% in the last 5 years, and consequently, the crime rate has nearly tripled during the last 4 years.
People nowadays watch hours and hours of T.V. each day, especially children and teens. Think about it. Children watching more TV + more violence in TV = More violent children, which leads to more violent adults when they grow up. These violent adults are capable of committing crimes such as robbery and murder, which in turn makes this world a more dangerous place. If this world is a more dangerous place, then kids are exposed to more violence and danger, which in turn causes them to grow up violent and dangerous. There is a never ending chain effect, which will continually make the world more dangerous with each passing generation, all because of children watching T.V.
Here are the statistics. 60% of programs on T.V. contain violence, and 40% of those contain heavy violence. According to Huesmann (2007): “Our lives are saturated by the mass media, and for better or worse, violent media are having a particularly detrimental effect on the well-being of children.” John’s (2007) study found the following:
The study followed 700 young people over a 16 year period. They found that youths who watched between one and three hours of TV a day were more than four times as likely to become involved in aggressive acts as those who watched less than an hour a day. The aggression rate for those who watched more than three hours a day was significantly higher yet.
