Mar Adentro, directed by Alexandro Amenabar and starring Javier Bardem, is a tale of one man’s wish to end his life and his search for someone to help him do it. His main aim is to be given the opportunity to die with dignity rather than grow old in the same bed in which he has lived for the last 30 years. The idea( Ramon’s idea) is that the person who helps him die will be the person who truly loves him. However it becomes obvious that that person is simply the one who is more desperate for his love. The film is about dignity and choice, the idea that a person’s life is their own and as long as they are sane (Ramon is not only sane but highly intelligent and a talented poet) they should be able to end their life. There is one scene which particularly stuck in my mind, in which Nessundorma is playing in his room and he starts to move and gets up from his bed, he then takes a running jump from his window and flies to the sea, which is his inspiration and biggest love. It is cinematically impressive, a helicopter was obviously used to fly over the Galician hills and to the sea, the first person view almost placing the viewer in the imagination of the protagonist. It is a scene of complete freedom and exhileration which contrasts with the claustrophobia of his bed and the confines of his crippling accident. There is not much about this film I dislike but if I was to criticise it I would say that the script is sometimes a little over emotional but the general sentiment is it’s strongest point so it is perhaps necessary. Fundamentally it is a tale of the mind and the body, and the fact that some people can have more of an impact on the world using only one of these than most people do with the use of both.
