Since I was a little girl, my parents have taught me the importance about caring for the elderly. For about the first 10 years of my life, my family and I lived with my grandparents, the parents of my dad. They were not really old, but my dad thought that they needed some company and someone to share something everyday.
As I got older my dad realized that it was good for us to live with our grandparents, but we needed our space, so he bought a house for our family. He, of course, felt sad and worried about his parents, would they be ok? Would they have everything they need? Wouldn’t they feel lonely? He knew they would, so he bought a house very near our grandparent’s
Not a lot of time after we moved, they diagnosed my grandma with cancer, she didn’t live for much after that. Maybe because medicine was not that “developed” as now a days. Even though this happened about 4-5 years ago, it’s amazing how many new things doctors have discovered or created in this time.
After my grandmother was diagnosed she lived only for about 9 months, but I’m sure that my dad did everything he could to give her the best quality of life. I could se him, buying medicines, talking everyday with the doctors and the most important thing, he spent time with my grandmother. She stayed at my house, and we hired a nurse to keep an eye on her, for she could no longer eat, go to the bathroom or even walk because of the treatment she was receiving. But, even though we had a nurse, my dad wanted to be there for her, and did some of the “chores” of the nurse, of course my grandma saw his effort and I’m sure it gave her maybe happiness or it made her have faith in the “procedures she was receiving. I think my grandmother felt loved, and that people around her really cared for her, this is what most of the elderly people should feel, or this is what I would like to feel when I grow to an elderly age.
I’m not saying this is what has to be done for every person,...
