Living in such a vain and commercial society affects every aspect of life in America, even our diet. Make you fat burgers with a side of heart attack fries and a put yourself into a diabetic coma soda are parts of a meal that has become common among average Americans. But we have to ask, why we would put ourselves in such obvious danger? Sadly, the only legitimate answer is convenience. All of the aspects from location to time make fast food a very dependable solution to hunger in a fast paced world. Even locally, fast food is very prominent. The most frequented fast food restaurants in Hampton, VA, are McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, and the convenience store, 7-Eleven. They have managed to pull us into their delicious quick food traps time and time again.
These restaurants are not successful from food quality. They have used many factors, such as location, to their benefit. In the area of Hampton, there are about three Wendy’s, five McDonald’s, four Burger Kings, and ten 7-Elevens located in the same general area. There is at least one of each restaurant on Mercury Blvd. Mercury Blvd. is an ideal location for such places because it is a main and frequently used highway. It is lined with shopping areas, hair and nail salons, doctor’s offices, Laundromats, car washes, post offices, a movie theatre, and many business offices. It is a haven for people quickly trying to run an errand before they go off to yet another obligation or people who are trying to find something filling on their short lunch breaks and these quick restaurants provide a reasonably priced solution. Another common area that these restaurants are located in is school zones. Wendy’s and McDonald’s are regularly seen near middle and high school. They thrive on the famished students who walk home or only have twenty minutes before their extracurricular activity begins. Fast food provides a convenience that can’t be denied.
